quick question for ya

How has the current market mess effected you?

I'm curious to hear how folks have been effected by the current financial market downward spiral. Is there anything we need to do right now to stay on the safe side?

How do kids learn?

tony's picture

After a week with my parents (and them coming to the conclusion that our tot is a genius), we had lots of discussions about how best to help our little 2-year-old develop/learn/grow/be stimulated heathily.  Honestly, it seems to come down to thoughtful attention - playing with them and also watching them figure out how to play by themselves. But how do we really know if our kids are developing well?  And I've heard lots of parents are getting into this "unschooling" concept?

Uncontrolled screaming

I am a new dad and we have a 3 month old son, Abram. His witching hour is usually around 6:30 PM or so. He typically will get fussy and will usually fall asleep for a few minutes. When we wakes, especially when mommy isn't around, he seems to be startled and will start screaming. The screaming will not usually stop by any conventional method. Shusshing, swaddle, passy, rocking, fresh air outside, nothing. He will only calm down when mommy returns. For instance, this went on for 45 minutes last night until my wife got home from her tennis match.

Remembering 9/11

sciguy75's picture

A child who was an infant on 9/11 is seven years old today. Many kids are now reaching an age where they are old enough to be aware and inquisitive about that horrible day, yet are young enough to have no direct memory of the event, no personal frame of reference. For those savvy daddies who have children around that age, how have you discussed, or plan to discuss, the events of September 11th with your children?

Is your toddler better behaved when others are watching him?

tony's picture

My parents, my in-laws, my sisters-in-law, and a lot of folks who help us watch Meme tell us how obedient he is when we're not around.  He listens.  He does what he's told without being asked twice.  He picks him his toys.  He even picks up other kids toys.  But the moment me or my wife show up, he gets whiny, demanding, and clingy?  what's up with that?  Why, oh, why, is this happening?

Step-Dads

Every now and then (not rare) this most beautiful three-and-a-half year-old cries for her dad.  I would love to be her dad, I can identify the part of me that would love to be that for her and be seen like that by her, and I am not.

"Green" House = Cost Savings?

Has anyone actually "greened" over their home and seen the results in the monthly bills?  What types of things should I be doing to save some money?

Pacifier aka Binky aka Nooky aka shut-up-plug, what's a dad to do?

Call them what you will, there seems to be a range of opinions regarding the appropriateness of these little pieces of plastic and rubber. What's the SavvyDaddy opinion?

Any experience with nut allergies?

Mark2x2's picture

Last Sunday, my wife and I had the scare of our lives. I actually was supposed to be at work that day and wound up being on call instead. Thank God I was with my family. We had kept our twin boys away from nuts and have just passed the 2 year mark. We've been discussing introducing peanut butter and last Sunday decided to let them have some that was in a rice crispy type of treat. Only a bite or two each, and 30 minutes later no bad reactions from either one.
