Laid off & looking for advice

Submitted by tony on April 30, 2009 - 6:00am.
Well guys, it turns out that I got laid off 2 weeks ago. Though the news sounds bad, I'm taking it as a great opportunity to pursue things I'm most passionate about and to spend some good summer time w/ the kids. Nonetheless, looking for advice on how to get through the transition & what else to expect. They gave me 2 months notice (which was really good of them!), so I won't know what it reallly feels like until mid-June.

the other guys have said it already - just keep at it and do whatever you can to stay positive. I found that it was helpful for me to get out of the house every day. Somehow or sometime, just get out of the house - schedule lunches and coffee breaks. Go work out. Go sign up for some classes. I found that I could only network & job search for so long every day before it wasn't productive.

Tony,
Along with a day-plan and structure, don't forget to reach out to everyone you have on LinkedIn and Facebook - you never know who can introduce you to that next opportunity. SD has certainly given you the chops to become a full fledged site creator.
Cheers and good luck,
Toby

6 years ago I was given 2 weeks notice on May 25 (same day as my much-better-half's birthday - swell!). The Defense contractor I worked for had lost a re-bid on the project I was on, so I let go (I worked for a sub-contractor, hired by the prime that lost the rebid).
I worked the phones and networked as best I could, and had an interim job ready to start on Aug 1. I say interim, because it was a paper-pushing variety of job, but required my Defense Dept security clearance (DoD clearances expire if they are not actively used for more than 6 mths, so I had a good reason to keep my clearance active). The job covered barely the mortgage, but I never planned on staying their long.
In Mid-October I was approached by the Contractor that won the bid over my former employer, and was hired as subject-matter-expert. More pay, same job.
Yeah, I was lucky, but I circulated my resume EVEYWHERE and worked phones/e-mail every day (weekends, too).
Have you begun networking via LinkedIn or other such sites?
Best of luck to you; I have a feeling you'll bounce back before too long. It may not be soon enough, but you will find a new place to hang your hat if you keep working at it.

sounds like you're starting on the right foot with a good attitude. Definitely take advantage of the time and spend it with your kids. They are only young once, and this could be a really memorable summer for them with their dad.
And trust me on this, try to maintain some structure. Go to the gym, meet up with people for lunch, get all of those house projects that have been ignored all these years. And definitely don't look for jobs all day - look hard, but don't obsess over it all day long.
