How to treat Infant eczema?
Submitted by julian on April 12, 2008 - 8:26am.
My daughter has been suffering from Infant eczema. rash all over her body and most prominently on her face. sometimes the skin breaks and she oozes pus. not fun. she's had it since 2 months and its gotten sort of worse now at 8 months. she wakes up scratching and crying.
also does anyone know a good pediatric dermatologist?
we've tried:
hydrocortozone
aquaphor
vasaline
neutrogena Norwegian formula
not bathing every day / bathing every day
the baby took some allergy blood tests for
dog, cat, mold, pollen, dairy, egg, wheat, soy and came positive on egg so we've eliminated it from mom's diet.
baby just eats breast milk, carrots, peas, rice cereal

Eczema is back with a vengeance
When we adopted our son at one month, he had baby acne really bad with lots of white heads. We were told treatments similar to those of eczema. Question whether he didn't actually have eczema then too! We moved to west Texas and have battled eczema for the past 8 months! He is 10 months and a mess.
We have tried vaseline, eucerin, aveeno, Shaklee baby oil, excederma, and now trying the new Neosporin. He has been on and off cortisone all his life. After his last time on cortisone, we got to a point where his skin was beautiful! We decided to take a chance and test if it's a milk allergy. We started soy formula and were good for a week. Then he came down with Roseola. That is clearing up but his eczema is back with a vengeance. More than we have ever seen. Ugh. Thinking about going back to his old formula since we don't want the long term effects of soy. Going to switch to detergent (again) and all house cleaners to something non-toxic. Truly wonder if it is axerbated by living near a desert?? Any suggestions!!
Re: Eczema is back with a vengeance
The medical journal "Pediatrics" published recent research re treating infant eczema. Researchers found that bathing the infant twice a week in a bath with 2 teaspoons of bleach added to the bath water was so effective that the study was stopped so that the babies in the placebo group(the group using plain water) could benefit from the treatment. Apparently it is similar to chlorinated pools. The chlorine (bleach) kills bacteria that causes skin infections. The article states that this treatment reducedcthecskin infections commonly seen in infants with eczema. Ask your doctor if this treatment is suitable prior to using it.
READ THIS: Before adding the bleach to the bath water, place the baby in another room away from the bleach. Make sure to only use measured 2teaspoons of bleach; put one cup of water in a plastic cup and add 2 measured teaspoons of bleach to the cup of water and stir it; fill the tub with bath water and then pour the mixture into the bath water; mix it well before putting the infant into the water; make sure the infant is in a different room when you are handling the bleach. Bleach that is not diluted with lots if water is very damaging to the skin, eyes and lungs.
Re: Eczema is back with a vengeance
I don't care if "Pediatrics" wrote about this and I'm an RN. There is no way that I'm going to put a baby in bleach water. Not only will it kill off all the "good bacteria" which you need, but as porous as a baby's skin is this sounds toxic. Also, it won't be good if it gets splashed in the baby's eyes. I don't trust this....
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?

Hello I am having the same problem with my son he just turned 1 today. I was reading and wondering where can I find the Aqua Dermis Cream bath ? Does it have to be prescribed ? Store bought ? I am desperate.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
Hi! I'm in Singapore and use Physiogel and QV for my girl. Choosing a sensitive skin product requires some product label reading knowledge and the general guideline is word like hypoallergenic, organic are generally more reliable than words like natural. Always choose a company that conduct trials on their product and learn to recognize the top allergens.
Perfume, preservatives, parabens, propylene glycol are some of the top allergens to avoid. I've written more on this on a sensitive skin product series, feel free to read http://eczemablues.com/2012/01/sensitive-skin-product-series-understandi...
Separately, if you like to help low income families with eczema in Singapore, do check out this link - it's about an eczema fund I've initiated with my donation

Managing Eczema for our Children
Hi! I've a baby girl, Marcie, who has eczema since 2 weeks old. Understand perfectly how difficult it is to manage our children's eczema, particularly those who are too young to not scratch (even my hubby scratches his eczema, what more a child?)
I have a blog http://eczemablues.com and in the midst of starting a support group for parents with eczema children (I live in Singapore). If you are interested in joining, do visit the link below

Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
Why don't you just see a doctor? Self medication is not always the best idea and I wouldn't risk my daughter health even if it seems like a minor affection. I guess you didn't hear about the man who turned blue while trying to treat his eczema on his own, but you could Google it and see if I am wrong... I am sure your daughter has some kind of insurance so you better use it and treat her properly, check out the Montana health insurance information and see for yourself if she would be covered for this, although there shouldn't be any problem.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
I know the best product that does absolute WONDERS for eczema or any kind of rash. I have a friend who has a three year old son, and he suffers with eczema, and she used the RENEW INTENSIVE SKIN CARE. AWESOME stuff, believe me!!
You have to enroll and become a preferred customer to get the stuff, but it is very inexpensive.
Only a one time fee, and your good.
My daughter would get a weird itchy rash of raised bumps on the arches of her feet. She would roll back and forth in agony with it, and I spent many sleepless nights with her b/c of it.
I used the Melaleuca product, and in seconds the itch was GONE, she turned over and went to sleep, and her rash disappeared. It was amazing.
If you want to know how to get some of this amazing stuff, just contact me and I'll tell you where to go and how you can get it even cheaper.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?

Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
My baby 8 months also suffers Eczema, however, after get advice from skin specialist, he actually get better than before...its very suprising when doctor show the picture's of children that suffered with this kind of problem..
Well, its very simple, Eczema cannot be cure, but we can control it.
- Warm bath twice a day. (using Aqua Dermis cream bath)
- put on lotion (recommended by doctor to your baby) right after bath.
- Avoid peanut or peanut butter
By this 3 simple step, you actually can control Eczema from attack your baby.
Good Luck.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
I have had eczema from birth and wouldn't recomend steroid based creams because eventually everyone develops immunity to steroids, and if your child has infant eczema, chances are it will be a lifelong disease. Steriods stopped working for me around age 25, since then it has been an ongoing quest for other natural treatments...
The best thing I've found has been bathing in sea water. The salt in sea water has natural anti-inflamatory properties, and will both heal the skin quickly and reduce itchiness. If you live near the coast, take your child to the beach and bathe him for a few hours. If you put him in the water and then take him out, it will probably sting quite a bit (it's essentially pouring salt into an open wound) as the water evaporates on the skin, leaving only the salt behind, this can be painful. Only way to deal is to grit your teeth and bear it, or you can put him back in the water, which will soothe the stinging.
If you can't make it to the beach you can try making a salt bath at home for him, just be sure to buy the right kind of salt. I bought some very expensive bath salts from Savon, only to find that I got a terrible eczema rash from bathing in it, probably because of the perfumes and oils they add to the salt. If you bathe him at home, just be sure not to make the water too hot, because hot water will set off an 'itch cycle' and increase inflamation. Really, the best thing is to bath in cold water, but who can bear that?! Luke warm should be ok.
Good luck, hope it works out for you.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
My daughter is 10 months and has suffered from eczema since she was about 2 months, this past summer when she was around 6 months old we took her to the beach and soaked her in the water for about 20 minutes. By the next day her skin was smooth and looked so much better, she was fine for about 2 months but now the eczema is starting to come back. It's too cold to take her back to the beach, so I'm going to try getting natural sea salt and bathing her in that at least once a week. We've tried every possible cream, prescription and over the counter and nothing has worked as well as the sea water.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
It is very painful to see your infant suffering from such disease, eczema. I read all the comment but got confused. I could not find the exact cause of it. Please anyone tell me what are the causes of eczema? Is there one or many more? Also which is the best solution for it? A scientific step by step discussion by expert will be more helpful.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
I am positive that the cause of infant eczema is the multiple combination vaccines given to infants as soon as they are born before their immune system is developed. The doctors are messing up the infants in the name of providing immunity causing years of suffering to infants and their parents. In no other country are kids given vaccines so early in their life. We all know that eczema is an auto immune disease. No other country has a higher rate of asthma and eczema than the US and it is time to figure out the root cause so that the future generation does not have to go through the hellish experience of either being a parent with an eczema inflicted infant or an infant who suffers every moment of his precious life. It is time for parents to get together and figure out the cause because no doctor or pharmacist or any one else is going to do it for us. Every one is making money at the cost of others suffering.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
superb... very simple treatment...... Let me try this and I post the true conclusion....
Thanks
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
FYI- Elidel can only be used on people ages 2 and older
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
this is the ONLY thing that worked for me and I had eczema for years (tried everything else).
it's topilene - glucocorticoid 0.05% glycol cream. now my son has it and it works on him as well.
good luck!
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
What most people don't realize is that eczema may be caused by food allergies. My daughter is allergic to dairy and gets eczema every time we try to introduce her to some dairy product. The only thing that the creams do is treat the problem once it has already occurred. To stop the problem before it happens, try experimenting with cutting out some foods that might be the cause
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
My grandson suffered from eczema for an extended time period. He caught it when he was two months old and suffered until he turned three.
I want to share that his eczema would not recede despite several medicines. We tried numerous doctors and medicines. Finally, we got him ayurvedic treatment that cured the problem. Interestingly, the ayurvedic doctor had advised to keep his head shaved all the time since the dandruff and even his own hair inflamed his eczema. We followed his advice and now my grandson is fully cured of the problem.
Just shared my experience.
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
Both my girls have eczema, one is 2 1/2 and the other is 8 months. We got it under control with a prescription steroid treatment and then began giving quick warm baths, pat dry and put the cream on within 3 minutes of getting out of the water. We use the products listed below and have seen the eczema go away completely as long as we stay on top of it.
Baby Aveeno Eczema Care Lotion

Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
I have figured out that any soaps with animal fat really break out my daughter which most store bought soaps are made with animal fats so look for vegan soaps or vegetable fat based soap..
I also witched to all natural cleaners. I did mess up and she got a hold of some regular soap and we have been paying for it since, she is a solid red rash. The presricption we used burns her when we use it. Benedyl burns, lotions burn. The zyrtec they make such a big deal over I honestly think makes her worse.. Last night she was bad but I gave her Zyrtec and this morning she is twice as bad. This happens every time I give it to her.. Why?
Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
My son is 2 and has eczema since we got him at 6 months old. We changed all of our laundry products to "free" and used a combination of over-the-counter hydrocortozone with Aquaphor over it when it dries.

Re: How to treat Infant eczema?
You have to find the right balance between cortisone and moisturizers, it is never easy to treat infant eczema. Good luck sweetie.
WOW
thats crazy . my 3 years old son JAYDEN has it too . its not that bad but we just make sure his body stay lotioned . lol . if we forget . . he reminds us . its too funny .
Eczema meds
My 2 year old twin boys have had problems with eczema since 6 months or so.
Our pediatrician said they couldn't use Elidel until they were 1 yr old, so it had to be cortisone creams until then. We found that they were both effective with regular use, the key being regular use. If we skipped a day, the affected areas became much worse.
We were lucky in that our boys didn't scratch a whole lot to begin with, but we did have 1 round of antibiotics because some areas around the mouth were becoming infected (it was hard to control with all the drooling from teething and the scratching.)
We limited baths to 2x/week (which was a horrific thought to both sets of grandparents, but we were looking out for our boys, not trying to make our parents feel better.)
At 2 yrs old the eczema continues and our doc thinks we will deal with it for a long time, but it seems to be controlled. We don't use Elidel everyday now, just when we see it flaring up.
My friends who've had children with eczema have also said positive things about Elidel.
I personally deal with eczema, but it's not bad for me and I just use an over the counter moisturizer on the spots. I also have bad allergies as do my siblings, so my boys are just dealing with bad genes as far as this stuff goes. We have not pursued allergy testing for the boys yet, but have tried to introduce foods one at a time and watch for allergies. We've only possibly identified one thing (tomatoes, and even that we're not sure if it's true for fresh tomatoes or just preservatives used in tomato sauces.)
Hope you find something that works for your daughter.
My daughter suffered from eczema
My daughter suffered from eczema, we have had some luck with suki products. several friends I've recommended it to have seen mild improvement.
we especially enjoyed using it on our baby. do the research www.sukisnaturals.com
ECZEMA
hi,
I have terrible eczema too and i know how miserable your baby is.I had a pharacist mix me up something and mine cleared up right away for years then it came back with a vengence I might add . I
went back to the pharmacy and the man had retired and no one knew what I was talking about. One night I couldn't sleep because my hand were itching so bad so I decided to search the net for homepathic remedies thinking maybe I had something in my home that would help when I came across a site called www.Freederm.com .They described how a pharmacist made them up a concoction and how well it worked and they decided to market it .I swear to you this stuff will work.I do NOT sell it Nor do I profit in any way for recommending it. I only tell people because it works. They have several pictures of people including babies with horrific cases of eczema and in as little as 3 days it's almost gone! If you send in before and after photos they will send you a free jar and they have a money back guarentee. Please for your baby's sake go check out their site. I ordered the package with the soap ,cream and the moisturizer. Now I use Aveeno for eczema lotion instead of theirs simply because it's available at my local drugstore and it works for me .I recommended this to a friend for her grandbaby (she has it so bad that grandma cries with her) she bought it and called me the next day after she tried it to thank me and said they could already see a major improvement and the baby was not crying anymore ...Good Luck....
Renew lotion for eczema
Hi Julian,
Neither of my two daughters have eczema, but we have friends who have had great success with Renew lotion and Renew bath oil produced by Melaleuca. Also they found using Melaleuca's phosphate and chlorine free laundry detergents to be extremely effective.
My family is a Melaleuca customer and we are also very pleased with everything we've tried. We are so pleased that we have become company representatives.
Here is a link to a PDF on the Renew lotion:

And a link about their home cleaners:

Could be Mineral oil in the product/medicine
Hey,
you know something that might really be aggravating the situation is the mineral oil in alot of these products. They use it as a filler here in the states but it's completely banned in europe. It seems to be used alot in the cortizone creams and almost every soap product you can buy at the grocery store, it can really dry skin out.
My wife has been using the Arbonne baby line (just so you know she does sell the stuff as well) for our son, it contains absolutely no mineral oils, and i'm sure there are plenty of other products out there mostly obtainable at the health food store. So i'm not trying to plug her sales but i really believe that the mineral oils will be an aggravator rather than a help i.e. Vaseline. It definately aggrevates and dries my skin.

this is my wifes website for those interested, or just speak to someone at the Health market and they will for sure know a good, safe product for you.
hope it helps

olive oil for excema
My son, 2 years old, has excema since birth. Finally, a physician suggested olive oil after a bath (especially on the scalp). Works wonders. We use a calming creme with brand name "Eucerin" as a body lotion on his trunk and back. Only on inflammed areas, we use Cortizone-10 Creme with aloe.
Our protocol has worked for us. Bathing every other night. After bath, use olive oil on the scalp, Eucerin on the body, and Cortizone cream on inflammed areas only.
Medically, have her screened for allergies.
Sid
thanks!
thanks, I'll try that.
I've also heard of some chinese medicine called "Skin Balance" has anyone tried it?

what's interesting is that it also appears on a pet food site for pets.

eczema
if it is eczema, i'd stay away from the topical steroid cream prescriptions, as all that does is thin out the skin and make it more prone to infection...
like bluewlvrn mentioned, talk to your doctor about elidel (http://www.elidel.com/index.jsp). it's non-steroid cream and helps with the itch as well as the eczema itself. a lot of my friends who are doctors and suffer from eczema recommend elidel over anything else in terms of prescription.
not sure about whether it's okay to use on an infant or not...
Allergies
My two sons both had (have) eczema. The primary cause turned out to be allergies. Both came up allergic to eggs (though oldest, 3 yrs now comes up clean on scratch tests). They both also had other food allergies (dairy, some grains).
My youngest (16 mon) has pretty much been ezcema free since we cut eggs and diary from his and mom's diet.
My oldest gets it even w/the food allergens removed. But he is also starting to develop more environmental allergens as well.
The things that worked best were steroid creams and Eladel. We tried just about every over the counter solution w/minimal effect. I don't recall when we started the creams on my sons, but i think it was after 12 months.
Re: eczema
my husband suffers from sever eczema and now our 2 yr old has it we have been dealing with the babies since about 8 months old. besides lotions (perfume free) and free detergents and bathing every other night in warm water not hot. seems to have controlled it till now.
the docs gave my husband a strong topical steroid that does clear it up amazingly but we dont care for the price or the fact that it is a steriod. i did try the freederm hc products on my hubby and they amazed me his mom and the dr. they are all natural and no harsh steriods. i am going to get some for the baby and put his ittchies and red patches to ease.
it may seem a little pricy but its actually cheaper then the perscrip meds and not harmful as it is all natural.
