when will my newborn become more, um, regular?

hoosierdaddy's picture

My newborn is 3 weeks old. She poops 10 times a day. I have been told that this is totally normal, but I haven't been able to find out when this should stop. When will I be free of this constant poop-changing madness? Weeks? Months? THanks

Be thankful the highway is not clogged

I wouldn't even be concerned about the change in frequency. I guess the way I look at it is that the digestive system needs to tone up and get in shape fro solid food. There is so much else to enjoy about a child. You will drive yourself nuts worrying about fecal frequency. Besides, infant poop is much easier to deal with than two year-old poop.

It's all relative. I know a couple whose first born had a fissure. The baby's anus was sealed. Imagine having to go through dealing with an infant with a colostomy bag. You would welcome normal poop any day.

Good luck with that!!

Who knows. It will change sometime in the first year (he he he) and if it is early, consider yourself lucky.

I think that the constant eat-poop reaction changes at what I've heard referred to as the "big poop". People talk about it happening sometime in the second or third month, when the baby doesn't poop for a day or two, and then it all explodes-- out the collar and sleeves of their outfit and all over the new couch you and the baby are sitting on. It didn't happen that dramatically for us, but there was a definite shift. But, with the possibility of the giant poop to look forward to, I would count yourself lucky for the eat-poop cycle. At least they are small, don't smell too bad (breastmilk?) and predictable. It is less fun to be out shopping and be embarrassed by your 10-month old's stiff fragrance.

Good luck.

haha, I don't quite remember when it started slowing down. For us, our infant pooped every time he fed (i.e. like 8 times/day) Like clockwork, he'd be half-way done with his bottle, and BOOM. I think you're looking at several weeks before things slow down.

I found a good poop 101 link on babycenter.
