Leaving a legacy
Many of you have probably spent more than your fair share of time behind a camera/camcorder during vacations and holidays to capture those perfect memories to be shared with family for years to come. I know I've spent countless hours editing and getting it just right but always felt like an important piece was missing from those compilations, namely me. Sure my voice might be heard asking questions or letting out a hearty laugh but where was my time? Well I realized I could make a special contribution to my childrens education about our family thanks to Google.
Here's the gist - register for google account using your child's name (johnsmith@gmail.com). It's free and will likely last forever. Now you can begin emailing your children whenever the mood strikes. Perhaps he was singing a favorite song on the way to school and it made you smile and inspired you to share the story with "him" in an email sense. Over time you'll have collected lots of stories about them, about your feelings and thoughts, and special events in your lives. I've been doing this for over a year now and it feels great to write like an adult to my kids and know that in time I will turn the accounts over to them for their personal use but also as a journal of the times before they could understand big picture life realities. Attach pictures, video, and other mementos. What's so great is the simplicity. How long does it take to send an email? You can even share the address with your relatives or friends to have them email the kids too. Afterall, we all have a different perspective on things.
So there's my contribution to the busy dads out there. Keep it simple and love your family.

Awesome idea! I plan to start this once we find out what sex the baby is...
Gmail / Picasaweb
Hi I couldn't agree more. I setup our daughters Gmail account the day she was born, and have had family members as well as my wife and I send her emails from time to time. Another cool Google feature is Picasaweb. I have all of her pictures from the day she was born categorized in various albums chronologically. Not only does this allow you to easily share photos with family and friends, it is a great way of keeping a backup - it even stores videos upto 100 MB on there. It is linked to her google account and we will have those forever (as long as google doesn't go out of business I guess). I have had to upgrade from the free account because I passed the limit (1GB) on the free account by her 1st birthday (1600 pictures!) but it's $20/year for 20 times that storage amount. the address is picasaweb.google.com try it out its free.
parenting, poo and pets
What a great idea. Thanks for sharing. I do a diary on the computer for the kids, but find it hard to update it regularly. Emailing is a much easier and accessible idea - and probably cooler too. Thanks again!
Very cool idea. I do feel
Very cool idea. I do feel the need for some sort of backup though. I want my little one to be able to explore her email account without the possibility that she will accidentally erase everything I wrote to her.
awesome idea!
brilliant! :-)
Brillant!
Let's hope that Google will still be around and that gmail will still be free. I just signed my 2 daughters up with their own email accounts.
