Brando at the Dinner Table
by Anthony Romanelli
One of the great things about toddlers truly has to be their
vocabulary development. From the
beginning oooh's and ahhh's, nothing is as adorably addicting as listening to a
toddler twist syllables, mix words, and make up pronunciations. Below are just a few from our toddler's own
personal diary...
"Pooling." -"Daddy, can we go pooling today?"" How cool to verb-i-fy a noun...
Obviously, my daughter is interested in going swimming. So, off to do some pooling. We pack our belongings and meander down to
the local pool where she then proceeds get to get "Shark Ride" from Daddy...
"Shark Ride"-With my daughter trying to keep her balance on
my back, I glide along the bottom of the pool
"Talked."-"Can I talked to Aunt Beth?"
"Is it time to feed?" -This one is fun...and obvious...though,
she's not a horse, I'm sure each one of us has feeding memories from our
kids...would love to hear some of yours...
"Can I computer daddy?
She loves watching daddy while he's writing on his Mac...she knows it's
our computer...If you ever get the chance, seriously, www.starfall.com is a great reading website
for kids.
"Daddy, can I have the ‘Mote'". You believe this? I'm fighting my 3 year old for control of the
remote...Sunday Night Baseball vs. another Dora rerun...we report, you decide...
"I like nanas." I,
too, like bananas, it's just a hell of a lot more fun saying ‘nanas.'
Watching my wife get ready, our toddler wants to be like
mommy, so just boldly asks, "Mommy, can I put on some ‘Stick Lip.' We have since purchased some chapstick for
her, just so she can play right along side Mommy.
My daughter is pretty good with noticing patterns in colors,
numbers, and shapes, but for the life of her, the closest she can come to
pronouncing it is ‘Patt-Ren." Every
single time, she says ‘Patt-ren.' Such
life is J
While borrowing her younger sister's doll, it is simply
‘Doll Baby,' instead of baby doll.
And my all time favorite...
"DIIINNNNAAAAAHHHHHH," With her hands pointed toward the
sky, and her voice in a controlled yelp, she imitates her daddy, as I re-invent
the Marlon Brando Line from "Streetcar Named Desire"...."STELLLLA," and replace
it with DIIINNNNAAAHHHHH, to get her excited to have...dinner =)
Take careful note of what your kids say and how they say
them...you, too, someday might want to sit down, have a ‘dwink,' and take a walk
down ‘Lane Memory.'
