Getting your toddler to start learning as early as possible might be difficult, but it's not impossible. With all of the educational toys on the market today made especially for toddlers, there are hundreds of ways for your toddler to learn while still having fun. But you might not be sure which toys are best suited for your toddler or even how to pick the best ones. Here's a brief guide to help you find the right educational toys for your toddler so they can have fun while learning something important at the same time.

  1. Know your child's interests. If your child is interested in dinosaurs and you buy him a Tonka truck, there's a good chance he won't play with it as much. But if you know your child's interests, you can find things they will have fun with that also teach an educational lesson. The more you know about your child and what they like, the easier it will be to select an educational toy that they will enjoy.

  2. Find age-appropriate toys. Almost every toy has a label on it that tells what ages will benefit from playing with the particular product. But if you're unsure about it being right for your toddler, talk to your child's teacher and find out what they are currently learning. You can likely find educational toys that coincide with their school lessons so they can be ahead of the class.

  3. Visit museum gift shops. This is the ideal place to find educational toys for your toddler. Many museum gift shops have board games, replicas and other toys that encourage children to learn. You can also find educational toy stores in the mall. Take your child with you and let them pick out a few of the toys that interest them.

  4. Let their musical genius take over. Musical instruments are one of the best ways children can learn and have fun at the same time. Find out what their favorite instrument is and take them shopping for one. Buy some beginner's handbooks and some other materials that will help them learn their new musical skill. Don't invest too much money in it at first, though. Children are notorious for losing interest in something just a few days after getting it.

  5. Research educational toys online. Websites like Ebeanstalk and Wonderbrains give parents great ideas for educational toys specific to their toddler's ages and abilities. They have a huge selection of products that are not only meant to educate, but they are also entertaining and amusing. Your toddler won't be able to put some of these toys down for hours because they'll have so much fun with them.

  6. Always go with safety. Even some educational toys are inappropriate for younger ages. Be sure you pay attention to the labels and warnings on the products. Some toys will be meant for older children because of the small parts and accessories that smaller children tend to swallow. Remember, just because it's educational doesn't mean that it's always safe for all ages.

  7. Find toys that encourage thinking skills. It's one thing to find toys that are filled with facts knowledge, but finding toys that encourage your child to think and work through problems will be a much bigger benefit to them as they grow older. Critical thinking and problem-solving are two major characteristics that employers typically look for. If your child has those years of experience in these two attributes, they'll be more prepared for the job of their dreams when they grow older.

  8. Read online reviews of toys before buying. Several websites allow users to rate the products they buy so others know what to expect. At Amazon, you'll find hundreds of toy reviews from customers who are either satisfied or dissatisfied with their purchase. Simply do a search for "educational toys" or something similar and you'll get a long list of products back with a number of reviews for each on to help you make your decision.

  9. Buy computer and video games that are designed for teaching. Not all video games are about shooting and stealing cars. Many of them actually teach valuable skills and values. The problem is that you might need to do so extra research to find these types of games. But these types of games can be one of the best things you ever did to help your child learn.

Playing with educational toys is a great way to start your toddler in the learning process. But with the number of toys on the market, it can be difficult choosing the ones that are best. Instead of being overwhelmed by the number of toys to choose from, follow the steps listed above to ensure you get the ideal products for your child. When they get older and they are excelling in school, they'll thank you for it.
